What ShackSwap Is — and Is Not
Plain-English overview for NZ hams. Keep it simple, play fair, and stay legal.
ShackSwap is…
- A community marketplace for amateur radio gear in NZ (buy · sell · swap).
- A venue: we provide listings, search, messaging, and simple tools.
- Primarily for local, person-to-person trades (meet-ups encouraged).
- Moderated: we remove unsafe/illegal content and nudge users toward good practice.
- Aligned with NZ law: see Terms, Prohibited Items, Safe Trading.
ShackSwap is not…
- A buyer or seller of items (we don’t own, hold, or inspect goods).
- An escrow, payment handler, courier, or auction house.
- A substitute for RSM licensing or law enforcement.
- A repair shop or calibration service.
- A place for illegal/non-compliant radio equipment or stolen goods.
Licensing reminder (NZ): Trading transmit-capable gear (transceivers/amps) assumes the buyer holds a valid Amateur Radio Operator Certificate and callsign (RSM). See Licence Requirements.
How it works (in brief)
- Browse & message a seller about an item.
- Meet safely (public/daylight) and inspect/test gear.
- Agree payment (cash or bank transfer). Confirm bank details by voice.
- Complete the trade; mark the listing sold.
NZ specifics to know
- Most listings are private sales, typically “as-is, where-is”.
- If a seller is in trade, they must say so and follow the FTA/CGA.
- Only sell/buy gear that is legal to use in NZ. See Prohibited & Restricted Items.
- Stay safe: read the Safe Trading Guide.
- We handle personal info under the Privacy Notice (Privacy Act 2020).
